Halide is a musician originally born in Texas, now based in Boston making overgrown electronica pop. I sat down with him and got their take on dinosaurs, music for animals, and more.
Say you’re playing your music off a giant speaker in the forest, what animals do you think are coming up and listening to it?
I think it depends on what music of mine is being played. If we're going with what I’m more known for, the more nature-y folky kind of stuff as opposed to dial tone. Then there’d be a shit ton of bugs but they wouldn’t be creepy, they’d be super chill. I feel like a family of deer would just show up and chill. Maybe a huge flock of birds would come around, like some blue jays or cardinals. And then like one or two ferrets would pull up.
Alternatively do you think there are any animals that would just hate what you're putting out currently?
I don’t think birds of prey would come out to listen to my music unless it's like a singular hawk coming down and landing on my arm. Bears I think would be split down the middle. I feel like some of them would think the music is cool and the other ones would be like fuck this shit I’m going back to bed. Maybe wolves too, I don't really see wolves fucking with my music. Unless it's like a chill werewolf
What type of music do you think wolves would fuck with?
Post-punk probably. Maybe some heavy metal, not quite death metal, but just some stuff more on the heavy side. I could see them really liking some sub genres of dubstep too.
What's your favorite sound that you hear in your day to day life?
First thing that comes to mind is just a really good dap with somebody. Whenever it pops just right and you look at each other and you’re just like ‘Fuck Yeah.’ But also some water splashing or like lapping up against some rocks. Most of what I’m thinking of are just nature sounds. Light wind rustling through the trees, critters scampering around, things like that.
Do you fuck with dinosaurs?
Dude, fuck yes. I’m not too into dinosaurs but the concept of them are the coolest thing ever. When I was a kid there was this little exhibit that me and my dad would pass by every Saturday where they had dinosaur prints. I remember looking at them and thinking that they were the coolest thing ever. Every time we passed them I imagined how the dinosaurs would tower over buildings and shit. I still think about that probably once a week.
Do you think birds do dinosaurs justice by being one of the few animals that outlasted things like the t-rex?
To be honest, yeah. I feel like it’s one of those things where it’s an unconventional way of doing something justice. They aren’t the same thing at all but I feel like birds are just as cool in their own way. They’ve got wings and feathers, fly around, and can jump from any height and be fine because they can soar. The fact that that was common and birds are what we got from dinosaurs is the coolest thing ever.
Which corporation do you have the most beef with?
By nature I think I just have beef with every big corporation that exists. More specifically probably Bungie. They’re extremely money hungry and predatory. I’m a huge Destiny 2 fan, I’ve been playing for a few years now but I had to take a huge break from it because of it. It’s a DLC release system and last years release cost hundreds of dollars for the full content and it was dogshit. They had to lay off a ton of people because the content was so bad everyone was getting refunds. They’ve been getting better, and it's clear the devs care, but whoever is in charge on the corporate side is so out of touch. But that can be applied to most corporations.
What's your ideal piñata?
One that's slightly larger than normal, in the shape of a ninja monkey from the Bloons Tower Defense games, filled up with like a bunch of 3ds or ds games. You wouldn’t be able to hit it as hard but that's okay.
Do you believe in aliens?
Yes, but it’s not going to be what we think it is. It's going to be a different form of life that has never existed before that we just couldn’t make up in our wildest dreams. We have a way of thinking and we don't exactly know how to think outside of that because we just don't think it's possible. So it's gonna be something that doesn't align with what our idea of life is.
If aliens as they’re stereotypically portrayed came down to earth to take it over, what song are you playing them to get them to leave?
Woodpecker No. 1 - Merzbow. Just harsh noise music. If they weren’t all knowing and truly believed whatever I told them and got them to think all music here was like that, they would probably just leave.
If you had to describe your music with a meal, what food is being served?
If I'm being honest I think a salad that has some strawberries and blueberries in it. Not like a fruit salad but a regular salad that just has some strawberries and blueberries thrown in it. It would have to be eaten on a hot June summer day down by a river with the most refreshing glass of water you’ve ever had. Like a glass of water you would get at 3 am.
Finally what are some artists you think people reading this should check out?
Patrick O’Neill is what I like to think of as The Microphones meets bedroom indie pop. It is legitimately so good. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve listened to I am Having So Much Fun. Nova Amor too, for whatever reason nobody in the states really knows about him but he’s super popular overseas. Finally Masakatsu Takagi, he has an album called Kagayaki that came out in 2014 and it's one of the most beautiful and raw albums that I’ve ever heard.
