DJ Re:Code is at the center of the current underground electronic music scene. A self-proclaimed ‘smorgasbord artist’ bun has pulled from every genre of music imaginable. Any electronic music from hyperpop to hardstyle DJ Re:Code has probably experimented with, if not mastered. Releasing her sophomore album ReVertPunk! last month bun was able to flex her production muscles once more, even further honing her craft. Getting started at a young age, bun was originally able to get started making music on a salvaged Mac her dad brought home using an entry version of logic. Being fascinated with video games and their OSTs and wanting to make soundtracks to them slowly transformed into being a musician. Once covid hit, that allowed her to define a sound and pursue her passion. Each release DJ Re:Code further pushes the limits of the genres that inspire her and the expectations of her fans alike.
What horror movie do you think you could survive?
I know this might seem like an insane choice to pick, but I think I could survive ‘The Thing.’ The John Carpenter Movie. Simply because I’ve watched that movie so many times now that I know exactly what the monster is all about. So I’d know what it does and what the rules are. I think I would be so scared of the situation that I would just escape very quickly. Like I would be in the helicopter in the first 10 minutes. If I had never seen the movie before I’d be dead. Like that monster is too powerful, it would just mimic someone I know and I’d get tricked immediately.
If you could bring any fantasy being or creature into the real world, what would you want it to be?
If we're talking just traditional fantasy creatures, I was a big ‘Eragon’ fan as a kid, so I want a dragon. I want to just be riding a dragon in the sky at all times. I’d definitely want the typical western dragon, the kind with 4 legs, kind of like the ‘Elden Ring’ dragon. The classic this is a scary dragon who lives in a cave to protect the gold. I want that dude hanging out in my backyard. I’d probably train it to be nice and like respect people's space, but I think in general it’d be kind of like a cat. Like I’d just let it go do its own thing as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
What would you send back in time to cause the most damage to the current timeline?
I feel like if you send back any piece of technology back it’s gonna cause a serious issue just cause they’re not gonna know what it is. So if I could send like a MacBook back to when they’re first understanding electricity so they could charge it, now the entire ecosystem of the world has changed. Now they know that this technology exists and they're gonna reverse engineer it to the best of their ability. Obviously not get the same result but you’d still have a rudimentary laptop in like 1950 instead of 1990. So if we were to obtain a cyberpunk future like we do in movies it would just take sending any modern computer back sometime in the last 100 years.
What muppets would you want to day drink with?
Miss Piggy. Just Miss Piggy. Nobody else. We’re party girling the entire night, we’re barely remembering it, we’re going to the Basement in New York, we’re getting blasted. There’s no way I’m hanging out with Kermit. Screw that guy, he annoys me. Why doesn’t he wear clothes but everyone else does? I don’t get it.
What if we also opened it up to Sesame Street characters?
Big Bird for sure. Big Bird is the only one who really knows how to party hard. Cookie Monster would get us kicked out. I feel like The Grouch would come reluctantly but then by the end of the night would come out as trans. If that wouldn’t happen then it would just be for the girls. Me, Big Bird, and Miss Piggy.
If you were stuck in the woods with 3 animals that you could talk to what 3 would you want them to be
My cats, it would just be my cats. If the animals are guaranteed to be my friends though probably a pack of wolves. I feel like a pack of wolves is kind of undefeated. I could just tell them to go hunt this guy, or that deer, or whatever. You know, they’re so militaristic. It would just be really easy.
If you could get any artist to make a concept album about anything you want, what artist and concept would you want?
I’d definitely ask Four Tet. Just because I want to see what he would do. I’d make sure its a concept that's out of his current comfort zone, like furries or something. Like an album where he investigates furry culture with a bunch of weird sampling and it would probably turn out to be the most beautiful album ever. Or maybe Skrillex. I’ve always wanted him to go back and do a reflection on his old Sonny Moore stuff. Like maybe a Sonny Moore story album where it's like this is who I was. But that's requesting a very specific thing from a very specific person.
If you choose how you would die, how would you want to?
I’ve always talked about how I want to go in some nutso way. If I’m old and my options are retirement home for the next three years or going out by blowing myself up with dynamite then I’m definitely blowing myself up with the dynamite. In a non-morbid way I dont think theres a way that I’m going out that's not suicide. Not in a sad way but in a I’m going out on my own terms and its ridiculous way. Like jumping off the Empire State and doing a double backflip. It's gonna be something nuts when I’m old as hell. But right now the explosion is what I’m thinking of the most.
What's the best and worst thing ever bought
I produce on a Mac Mini from 2018 and that was the greatest purchase I’ve ever made. It made it so I could just produce music for so long with no problems. Only recently has it had some hiccups and it’s still manageable. I put it into a rack on my desk and I never see it and it never has problems so that's given me the most bang for my buck. Worst purchase… god I’ve bought some stupid stuff. A long time ago I was making a CD run with a friend of mine and got a lot of CD cases, but I got way too many cases. I’m talking like 2016 and I still have cases floating around my house. Like there's just half shells of CDs cases everywhere. I just find them and it’s like why did I order so many. It’s just haunted me for years so that's probably the worst thing.
What animal would make the best dubstep?
Frog. They already make the sounds on their own. They just need to record their voice and just put it through serum, make a really deep ribbit. Perfect, that's a dubstep growl. They also have little fingers so they could probably use a computer.
What crime is the best to commit while listening to your music? (not that you condone it)
If it's my old music then pirating. Like pirating music in your house while feeling moody. But the new album, arson. The whole album kind of refers to arson a couple of times. I think if you want to be in the exact environment to listen to it it’d be a burning house. Don’t do this actually, but you get the idea.
What artists do you think people reading this should check out?
Recently I played a show with this smaller New York DJ, Phoebe Weyland. Absolutely one of my favorite DJs ever. Definitely check out her shows if you can. Everyone who collaborated on my album tracey brakes, underscores, opalla. I’m letting unforeseen forces take the wheel is brilliant. 0khz is unbelievable, if you happen to find a secret folder of 0khz remixes they are on another level. Then some people I know like thirtyonetwentyfive, RYL0, tobre are all great. Then my side project, R.Webding, go listen to that.
