GOM’s music embodies emotion in a way that is deeply personal while still maintaining its level of relatability to the listener. Perfectly explaining the feelings of falling in love and going through heartbreak within both the writing and production. That feeling is only elevated when you know that the biggest goal behind GOM’s music is for him to be able to express those feelings for himself. Growing up having difficulties reading and understanding emotional expression outside of surface level things, his music gave him a portal into understanding. Music was something that couldn’t judge him. First starting in 2013 putting subpar rap songs onto Soundcloud, he started to make friends and connections through his music. Eventually leading him to getting introduced to the hyperpop scene in New York. While his music flirts with the ideas of hyperpop, his work is as if indie rock and dance music had a lovechild who desperately needs therapy. Currently working on being fine with imperfections GOM is releasing music as he sees fit. Dropping two loosie singles ‘Fumes’ and ‘Code 2’ in order to keep creative juices flowing, it is an exciting time to be a GOM fan while we wait to see what is next. Read below to fully get into the mind of one of the most vulnerable artists coming out of the scene.
If you were the god of something, what would you be the god of?
You know the videos where there will be someone in a less fortunate predicament and they get shown compassion? I have autism and I like watching kids with autism getting to go on the field with their favorite sports teams or something like that. I think I would be the god of those videos. I watch them all the time, and I cry so much. I can’t get enough of them. In a more broad sense I would say the god of compassion. Or the effort of being compassionate lets say.
If you could spend a summer living in any book, which book would it be?
Well, the seven year old in me is like Halo. The Halo book. But in all reality probably like Narnia or The Hobbit. Somewhere mythical where life gives you meaning from birth. I think I’ve always been interested in things around that thought process. I essentially want to go somewhere with a quest menu that gives me purpose.
What would your ideal quest be?
I would love to lead a march against an evil army. But also I think I’m on the good side and then I have to do another fight against the guys I was fighting with the first time because they weren’t the good guys. I think that would be my quest, or something completely different like being a dragon tamer.
With your luck, what mythical creature do you think you would have the best chance of discovering?
Probably like a goblin that’s extra annoying. There’s nothing special about him or anything, he just yells more. Or like the loudest bird ever, it can’t fly away and it has small feet. I wouldn’t get a dragon though. I don’t have that skill. That’s some main character shit and I’m the main character's fourth cousin that lives upstate.
If you were a plant what plant would you want to be and where would you want to be living?
A monstera. It’s the plant that all the guys who live in LA and do zyns have. I would be that plant because then I could talk some sense into them boys. Help them out a little bit. I’m very into being introspective and hating on yourself with purpose. Not like being mean to yourself, but like recognizing your mistakes and thinking about them every once in a while. I would love to be a monstera so I could just whisper sweet nothings through the dirt to those guys. I think there’s a lot of work to be done in the LA zyn bro community and I think I could find fulfillment in that.
If Garfield hit you up and was like “Yo you seem so chill, you wanna hang out sometime?” What would you do?
First thing I’m hitting him back and saying “Wow, of course you noticed.” And then I’m immediately turning into a tinder douchebag. I’m gonna be like “Hey what’s up!? I hate mondays soooo much. You want some lasagna?” I’m doing whatever it takes to hang out with Garfield. I want him to sit on my belly and pur. So that’s my angle, and I will ruin my moral compass for it. I would also want to talk to his owner. I gotta talk to him because he hasn’t put a ring on sweet lady yet and that’s ridiculous. She’s been there and put up with Garfield and Odie. She’s put up with all of that and then Jon is an accountant. She’s stayed by. Jon needs to figure that out.
What's the simplest thing in life that brings you the most joy?
I have a cat and a dog and I really like hanging out with them. I like when it storms outside and I watch Fantastic Mr. Fox. That makes my loins activate. I don’t know what it is about it but I turn into a grown man. Or like walking outside and it smells wet. Things like that give me gratification, and I try to make things like that come through in the music I make. I think channeling stuff like that and reminiscing helps create art that just feels more genuine. And that also brings immense joy.
If you could dive into the unreleased work of one artist, which artist would you choose?
The obvious answer is Frank Ocean. I would cry a bunch but it would be worth it. But if I had to be really honest with myself it’d be this band called America. They’re this band from the 70s that my mom really likes. Just growing up listening to all of their songs makes me so happy. They’re actually the reason why I picked up a guitar in the first place, so probably them.
Oh no… I’m lying. I’m lying so hard.
Usher for sure. Unfortunately the Diddy stuff happened but I would sing Climax by Usher on the bus to school as a kid. It was embarrassing, but I got a hug from a girl for the first time because of that song and I will never forget that. Usher works in mysterious ways.
What hobby of yours would you want to turn into a superpower?
They have like diagnostic drawings for certain issues with engines and transmissions and stuff. Those drawings just give my brain a hardy. Anytime I look at blueprints, or really any mechanical thing that's broken down. My brain just gets so happy. I enjoy looking at them so much. I think my superpower would be people would just watch me do that and then they’d give me a lot of money.
Which animal would you want to be your mentor?
I don’t know what they’re called but they’re like a lemur but baby. They're really small and can fit in your hand. Then when I’m on airplanes and they only give me one biscoff cookie I would have him steal more for me. I don’t care about the mentoring. I don’t care about anything like that. I care about another biscoff cookie. I’m a big guy. Is this equality or equity?
What’s your hottest take?
Okay first, yay for Taylor Swift for being a successful woman in music and breaking glass ceilings multiple times. I just feel like I always see her in the media over some bs. And in my personal opinion, find better pr honey. Find people who will actually do their job properly. I have to assume your team is fumbling it and it’s not just you. When you have enough money, power, and sway you have to get your pr team in balance. And she makes good music, I just wish she had better pr.
What artists do you think people reading this should check out?
For other musicians you should check out Kahre. He’s my manager but he also does my music videos and he’s so good at it and such a pleasure to work with. He works for a lot more reasonable budgets and he’ll work with anybody as long as the music is good. And then Aldrch. He is probably the best person to go to when it comes to making sure a show goes well. He does lighting design and sound design and everything outside of just his own music. He is so good to work with and really is just a sweetheart and a blessing of a person to be around.
