trndytrndy is a 21 year old musician currently living in upstate New York. They started their musical journey at age 4, and have grown into an even more interesting musician every year since. Starting on the drums and then experimenting with Garage Band at age 6, music has always been a part of their life. Really starting to hone their skills with dubstep and general EDM music, they started posting onto Soundcloud at age 13. Evolving since then and going by different aliases, the trndytrndy project was born in 2020. Originally garnering a fanbase within the hyperpop scene, they have since moved on to being a more broad electronic musician. This is most evidently seen in the jump in sound from the last 2 projects they’ve put out. While their 2022 ep titled ‘the halloween ep’ was a mix of hyperpop, indie rock, and chiptune; their recent project ‘Virtua’ is truly a love letter to 90’s education music. The type of music you would hear while browsing an online encyclopedia, or the opening credits to a documentary that went straight to DVD. This genre being dubbed utopian scholastic. Being inspired by the likes of Animusic, Seth Nova, and old CD-ROMs trndytrndy went into this project embracing nostalgia while wanting to try something new. Originally just working on small ideas with different VST emulations from the 90’s, the sound quickly stuck in their ear and we ended up with the wonderful project ‘Virtua.’ Gain a view into the mind behind the project and then listen to it for yourself below!
What animal would you eat to absorb its powers?
Well, my fursona is a raccoon bear hybrid. I can’t eat a raccoon bear, but if it had to choose one I’d probably pick the raccoon. Raccoons are pretty cool. I’m already nocturnal basically so I think I’d really just be getting the power of being a silly little guy. And the tail. The tail is really a core part of why I’d eat the raccoon. I don’t know if I could bring myself to eat one though. I suppose if they had raccoon jerky at Bucees it would be worth it to eat it. Then I’d be sneaky and subversive and have a tail.
If you could bring one invention from Phineas and Ferb to life which one would you choose?
That’s a good question. Honestly It’s been so long since I watched it that I’m forgetting what most of the contraptions are. Obviously there’s the rollercoaster, that was like the first episode. I’m thinking that I’d get that projector that Dr. Doofenshmirtz used to project a bunch of aliens over town. I feel like that would be pretty fun to have. I don’t really know what I’d use it for but it’d be a good thing to just have on hand.
What historical figure would you get to help you win a bake off?
I keep thinking of really old historical figures, and the problem with old baking is that a lot of it doesn’t really taste good. There’s a lot of time where sugar was considered ultra valuable so I don’t really know. Really I’m thinking who could cook and is historical in my mind. Paula Deen maybe. She adds butter to everything and I feel like she could help you win a bake off. I don’t know if she’s considered a historical figure though. I’m gonna say that she is just so I can win the bake off.
What real life event would be the most fun to create a soundtrack for?
An eclipse I think would be really fun to do. I think there’s a lor that you can take out of that. Honestly an eclipse is the biggest thing that’s coming to mind. I guess a more “normal” answer would be like a fashion show. Or like martial arts sparring would be really cool if you’re into doing sound design stuff. But I think an eclipse I could have the most fun with.
If you had to dedicate the rest of your life to becoming best at a board game what game would you choose?
Monopoly. That’s an easy one. I have a slight vendetta there though. I think I was like seven years old and I was playing it with my brother and grandma. I forgot exactly what I did but essentially my brother was just laying low and not buying the expensive properties. Like buying the ones you landed on the most. He ended up buying Boardwalk and in my seven year old head I was like the most expensive is the best. He asked me if I wanted to buy it so I gave him all of my Monopoly money for it and then he won by default. Ever since then I’ve had a vendetta and I just want to get so good at Monopoly that that can never happen again.
What's your perfect sandwich
I was actually talking about this the other day with some of my friends. I think my base meat is turkey. Like if you get bland turkey it just works with anything, but a good turkey tastes great and also works with everything. Add in some fresh lettuce, some greens, add some mayo and mustard. Toast the bread. That’s my perfect baseline sandwich. It’s kind of that anything mood sandwich. No matter what that sandwich will hit.
What piece of media has had the biggest negative impact on you?
The first one that comes to mind is the movie ‘Ready Player One.’ I saw that movie in theaters and getting out of the theater and maybe a few days after I was like “yeah I thought that movie was pretty good.” Seeing it in IMAX you don’t really think about what's going on, you’re just looking at the visuals. But ever since then every time I think about it, it’s like why did I waste my time watching that movie. It’s the stupidest shit ever. Just every time it comes to mind I think about a new detail where I’m like “what did that have to do with any of the story?” Every time I’ve thought about it since it doesn’t bring up any good feelings.
If you were in a plane crash how long do you realistically think you could survive?
If I was really determined and I didn’t have any injuries, then maybe a week. Longer than that then I’m probably just giving up. If the plane crashes in the middle of nowhere it’s gonna take some time for them to find or access the crash site. It kind of depends on how fast they get you. If I could just chill by the plane wreckage and wait for them to get me then I’m good. But if it’s like winter I don’t think that I’d last very long.
What are your top 5 candies?
Dark Chocolate
Junior Mints
Peppermint Patties
Andes Mints
Dots
I’m not like a super big candy person though. I’m allergic to peanuts and a lot of candy is cross contaminated So I can’t have it. Mostly it’s just standard chocolate stuff and minty candies. I’m definitely more of a baked goods person.
What are your top 5 baked goods then?
Lava Cake
Brownies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate Cake
Cannoli
What gameshow do you think you have the best chances of winning?
I’d say ‘Jeopardy’ but I’m also terrible at answering certain questions. Especially in a fast-paced environment like that. I guess ‘Wheel of Fortune” I could probably be pretty good at. It’s simple enough it’s basically just hangman but instead of guessing a word you’re spinning a wheel. I think I could do that.
What artists do you think people reading this should check out?
There’s one specific artist. They’re only on soundcloud but I love it so much. They make the catchiest, one off, throw them on soundcloud songs. Dog Park. They’re super underrated, they only have like 300 followers. But their stuff inspired hotel room and I just highly recommend checking them out. Then there's this Korean artist, archie, that does these very textury emotional tracks. They released an album recently which is how I found them but I also highly recommend them.
